He shuddered at the thought of the blast, then again at the memory of what had transpired between them afterward. Maybe it the touch of her parka against his leather jacket, or the fresh, feminine scent that brushed his nostrils and relieved the taint of the bombs. Whatever the reason, he was acutely, elemental y aware of her beside him. The depth of that awareness paralyzed him for an instant, one in which he realized that somehow, impossibly, she had become important to him. And what the hel was he going to do about that?

Nothing, he told himself fiercely while the conversation moved on without him. You’re going to keep your hands off her, because she doesn’t need another disappointment in her life. A pair of images rose unbidden in his mind—his mother and Helen. Both wore identical looks of sadness, souring his gut and pinching his conscience.

“I want to go after Ferguson, Chief,” Alissa said, jolting Tucker out of his painful moment of self-awareness.

“I know you do,” Parry replied, “but the needs of the task force would be better served using you elsewhere. You’re a crime-scene specialist, remember? Approach it from that direction and stop trying to be a beat cop.” He glanced at Tucker, and his eyes held a faint chal enge, or maybe a warning. “Help her with whatever she needs. Beg, borrow or steal the necessary equipment. And whatever you do, don’t leave her alone again. Ferguson—or whoever he is—

has a bad habit of waltzing into and out of the PD like he belongs here.”

The guarded look in Parry’s eyes and Alissa’s hiss of indrawn breath told Tucker the others had come to the same conclusion he had. It was possible they weren’t looking for Ferguson at al . It was possible their kidnapper was a cop.

Chapter Nine

Stung by the chief’s implication that she’d forgotten to focus on her specialty, and stunned by the thought of an inside job—Alissa stumbled down the stairs to the basement, eyes stinging with the smoke and chemical funk. The stinging became tears when she ducked under the caution tape and stepped inside what was left of the Forensics Department offices.

Much of Cassie’s equipment had survived, thanks to being in the next room over, but the shock wave was likely to have messed with the delicate computer chips and fine-tuned instruments. There was no way the machines could be trusted to give accurate readings until they’d been examined and recalibrated by an expert. The computers and Alissa’s equipment had sustained the brunt of the blast. She winced at the sight of strewn, blackened papers and the remains of her scanner, which had been blast-gutted and burned to an unrecognizable tangle of metal and melted plastic.
